What is the Huawei MateBook Fold Ultimate Design?

It is a laptop with no physical screen half. Closed, it is the size of a 13-inch notebook; opened out, the whole thing becomes a single 18-inch OLED display — the largest foldable screen on any computer. You can use it three ways: folded flat as an 18-inch tablet or desktop display, propped on its integrated kickstand, or half-folded so the lower screen becomes a virtual keyboard, with a magnetic physical keyboard available when you want real key travel.

The first generation launched in China in mid-2025 and was the debut device for HarmonyOS on PC. The 2026 model arriving on 5 August is the second generation.

Confirmed specifications

These have been confirmed by Huawei at its HarmonyOS computer technology event and in its official teasers:

• Processor: Kirin X90 Plus, replacing the Kirin X90, with roughly 25% higher overall performance
• Display: 18-inch dual-layer flexible OLED, 3.3K resolution, 92% screen-to-body ratio, 1600-nit peak brightness, P3 colour gamut, HDR Vivid
• Hinge: Basalt waterdrop hinge, the largest foldable hinge used in a computer
• Screen construction: UTG fluid laminate
• Stylus: M-Pencil support — the first MateBook Fold to include it
• System: Ultra Space Memory and Ark Engine acceleration
• Finish: gold leather back cover with gold HUAWEI | ULTIMATE DESIGN branding shown in Huawei's teaser
• Launch: 5 August 2026

Huawei also confirmed a second machine for the same event, the ultralight MateBook Pro S, running a separate new chip called the Kirin XE90.

What's still unconfirmed

Treat everything below as reported rather than official — we'll update this guide the moment Huawei confirms anything on 5 August.

• Price. Not announced. See the section below for what the previous generation cost.
• Colours. Huawei's teaser shows gold. Notebookcheck reports the teaser series also includes white, beige and black.
• Configurations. Leaks suggest the tiers stay at 32GB memory with 1TB or 2TB storage.
• Battery and weight. The outgoing model used a 75Wh battery and weighed 1.16 kg at 7.3 mm unfolded. Nothing has been confirmed for the new one.
• A second, smaller model. A more affordable “mini” foldable PC has been reported as being in development, separate from the Ultimate Design.

When is the Huawei MateBook Fold Ultimate Design 2026 released?

Huawei confirmed the date on 29 July 2026, announcing on Weibo that the new MateBook Fold Ultimate Design arrives on 5 August 2026, at an event starting 14:30 China time. Full specifications, configurations and pricing are expected on the day. As with Huawei's other HarmonyOS computers, the China release comes first.

How much will it cost?

Huawei has not announced a price for the new generation. The useful reference point is the outgoing model: when the first MateBook Fold Ultimate Design went on sale in China it was ¥23,999 for 32GB+1TB and ¥26,999 for 32GB+2TB — roughly US$3,300 and US$3,700 at the time. That places it firmly in the premium creative-laptop bracket rather than competing with mainstream ultrabooks.

Whether the new generation holds that line, given the new Kirin X90 Plus and the added stylus, is the open question. We will publish the real figures here as soon as Huawei confirms them, and current prices for every configuration will be shown on the product page.

Worth knowing: the outgoing 2025 model is still an excellent machine and its price has come down since launch. If you would rather not wait for the new generation, it is worth comparing the two.

It runs HarmonyOS, not Windows

This is the most important thing to understand before ordering, and most coverage glosses over it. The MateBook Fold runs HarmonyOS for PC, Huawei's own operating system. It is not Windows and it is not macOS, so Windows software does not install on it, and there is no Google Play Store.

What you get instead is a large and growing catalogue of HarmonyOS applications, Huawei's own office suite and productivity tools, and anything that runs in a web browser. Interface and keyboard support English. The system is genuinely well matched to the hardware — the folding and multi-screen behaviour works because the OS was built for it — and the machine excels at reading, annotation, media and multi-window work on that 18-inch canvas.

So the question is what your daily software looks like. If you work in a browser and Huawei's own ecosystem, or you want it primarily as a large-screen creative and reading device, it is superb and there is nothing else like it. If a specific Windows application is essential to your job, this is not the machine for that.
